Wretched poverty is for memoirs. This was a worthwhile story for its unusual heroine, one I would remember for quite some time. After the death of its final leaf, the trees lay barren like a country that had abruptly lost its people. I found the atmosphere of this novel to be tye of darkness and despair. Emerence never stops being tyrannical, even in her expressions of love.

When Emerence reminiscences her past while she stitchesI cry ; when she reprimands either Viola or the writer and shows a speck of her blooming szabp ; I smile and when her eccentricities peak with obnoxious childish acts ; I laugh. When she returns, Emerence feels furiously betrayed.

It is unusual, original, and utterly compelling. A award winning novel, I rate The Door 4 quality stars.

A few times after their arguments, I have to put the book aside and return when I am ready for more fire and brimstone. This book certainly deserves the said gesture.
